THE Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) is set to open a new facility in Roma township, Lusaka, to accommodate incarcerated mothers with children and pregnant inmates.
ZCS Commissioner General Frederick Chilukutu announced the development during the 2024 senior officers’ Annual Ball on Friday.
The facility, named after the late Diana Nalupya, the first female Acting Commissioner of Prisons, aims to provide a more humane environment for mothers and their children.
“To provide separate confinement for incarcerated mothers with children, may I report that a safe home has been identified in Roma township in Lusaka and renovation works are underway.”
“The centre will accommodate female inmates who have children in order to give the child a home set up environment and it will also accommodate pregnant inmates,” Chilukutu said.
Chilukutu revealed that currently, 76 children are being held in correctional facilities across the country hence the new facility will offer a home-like setting for these children.
In addition to the new facility, the Chlukutu said ZCS is expanding its agricultural operations to boost food security and generate income.
The new farms are being developed in various districts, including Mwomboshi, Kalungwishi, Mibanga, and Mibenge to increase production, crop diversification and growing of cash crop such as soya beans and wheat to boost income and national food security.
Meanwhile, on the infrastructure front, the Service has completed construction of a new correctional center in Serenje District, which will be commissioned in February 2025.
Furthermore, ZCS has established two new companies: Top-Notch Security Services Limited and Kalonga Waste Management Company Limited in order to diversify its revenue streams.
