Jay-Z Expresses Gratitude to Dr. Dre During his Heartfelt Grammy Acceptance Speech

Last night at the 2024 Grammys, Jay-Z was honored with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. In a touching acceptance speech, he paid tribute to Dr. Dre for trailblazing the path for hip-hop artists in the music industry.

Thanks to Dr. Dre. He’s somewhere here. Oh, there he is! Andre Young, thank you, sir. All the doors that you opened. Showed us that we can be rock stars. Seeing you on Rolling Stone. When you came out West, you took it to a whole new level. Put us on the covers of Rolling Stone. Put us around the world, you and Snoop. All that y’all did, all these records y’all broke — thank you for this. Honoured to accept it. And thank you to the Black Music Collective for all the work that you guys do.

During the remainder of his speech, he took a moment to criticize the Recording Academy committee for consistently overlooking his wife in the Album of the Year category, a decision he respects.

Meanwhile, in 2020, the Black Music Collective (BMC) was established as a dedicated body within the Recording Academy, committed to amplifying Black voices in both the Academy and the broader music community. Their efforts focus on enhancing the representation of Black artists in the industry and among Grammy nominees. This involves practical initiatives such as providing scholarships for young talents, formulating best practice policies for the Academy, and, of course, recognizing outstanding Black artists who have made a lasting impact on the music industry across various genres and cultures. The BMC introduced the Global Impact Award, renaming it in honor of Dr. Dre last year, as a tribute to his significant contributions.
