AFCON 2023: Jordan Ayew details the reasons for Ghana's loss to Cape Verde.

Ghana suffered a disastrous start to their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations journey, facing a shocking 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde in the inaugural Group B match. Veteran forward Jordan Ayew points out a crucial missing quality that hindered their success against Cape Verde.

Jamiro Monteiro secured the lead for the Blue Sharks in the 17th minute, capitalizing on Richard Ofori’s parried shot. Despite Majeed Ashimeru leveling the score, the goal was disallowed for offside. Alexander Djiku netted Ghana’s lone goal in the 56th minute. However, a heartbreaking 92nd-minute goal by Garry Rodrigues sealed a painful defeat for Ghana, as reported by BBC. The loss was particularly unexpected for a team hoping to overcome their 2021 group stage exit.

The Crystal Palace forward said the team lacks the experience to compete at AFCON.

“We lack experience. You can say anything, but at the end of the day, more than 10 of the players are playing their first AFCON, so these mistakes will happen. So we need to learn quickly because AFCON is not waiting for anyone. We are men, and we need to stand up,” via Joel Bortey.

While Ghana may not be regarded as favorites in this tournament, there is a heightened expectation for redemption after their group stage exit in the previous edition.

The Black Stars, last victorious in the 2019 AFCON, are set to encounter formidable opponents, including seven-time champions Egypt and Mozambique, who drew 2-2 in the Group B match.
