Four people, including a bus driver and his son, have died while 36 others have been injured in a road traffic accident involving a Power Tools public service bus and a Volvo truck and trailer along the Great East Road in Lukwipa area of Rufunsa District.
The accident happened around 11:00 hours on yesterday as the bus was travelling towards Chipata while the truck was heading towards Lusaka.
Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi in a statement said preliminary investigations indicate that the truck driver moved into the opposite lane while attempting to avoid hitting a stationary motor vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming bus.
Chilabi said the bus driver, Ask Mulobela and the conductor, Innocent Mulobela, who is reported to be the driver’s son, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Mpanshya Mission Hospital.
Two passengers travelling on the truck also died. One has been identified as Fortune Mwanza, while the other is an unidentified male believed to be aged between 25 and 30 years.
Chilabi said 57 passengers were on board the bus, of whom 35 sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Mpanshya Hospital.
The driver of the Volvo truck, 25-year-old Paul Banda of Sinda District, also sustained serious injuries and is admitted to the same hospital.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at Mpanshya Mission Hospital Mortuary, awaiting identification and postmortem examinations.
