POLICE RULE OUT FOUL PLAY IN KAMWALA MARKET FIRE.
The Zambia Police Service has clarified that the fire that swept through part of Kamwala Market in Lusaka on August 18, 2026, was caused by a brazier reportedly left burning at a makeshift restaurant.
The clarification follows reports suggesting that the fire may have been politically motivated.
Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi says preliminary investigations indicate that the fire started from the unattended brazier before spreading to nearby structures.
Mr. Chilabi says approximately 20 makeshift trading structures were gutted in the inferno.
He says Kabwata Police Station received a report of the incident and immediately dispatched officers to the scene.
